Lunar Brewing Co.'s Penumbra Porter is a rich and complex brew. Its color appears to be purely black, but around the edges of one's glass one sees a deep ruby color. The piquant maltiness complements the dark chocolate/roasted coffee bean and soft caramel aspects of the flavor profile. The bitterness is provided by two varieties of hops, Northern Brewer and Willamette. The Northern Brewers provide a barely perceptible black currant or dried fruit aroma, while the Willamettes provide a subtle palette of earthy aromas. These hop aromas provide a complement to the piquant flavor, resulting in an almost fecund richness. The finish is dry, with the malt and hops aromas lingering slightly. Original Specific gravity is 1.054; Finishing Specific Gravity is 1.012; Alcohol is approximately 5% by volume.
Lunar Brewing Co.'s IPA is amber in color, with reddish tints. The aroma is grapefruit like, with a slight floral component. The flavor is big grape fruity and malty, with slight hints of caramel. As befits an IPA, this beer is bitter. The hops are Chinook and Cascade. The Chinooks provide a strong grapefruit taste and aroma, with slight touches of other citrus fruits. The Cascades provide citrusy and floral tastes and aromas. Original Specific Gravity is 1.064; Finishing Specific Gravity is 1.014; Alcohol is approximately 6.5% by volume.
